Leisure
refers to freedom from work and obligation became the definition of leisure.
Leisure usually occurs when people are most free to be themselves.
Leisure have
3 main characteristic of leisure; perceived freedom, autotelic activity and
beneficial outcome.
Perceived
freedom refers that we have a choice of when we want to go and where we want to
do a certain activity for the varied number of hours, days or even weeks;
example will be like if can decide when you want to go shopping and how long
you want to shop and when you are tired of shopping you can head home to rest.
This cannot happen if we are to be working as there is a fixed working time and
we cannot choose when we want to go work or when we want to leave from work.
Autotelic
activity refers that we have purpose in mind. For example I love cycling, I
will go all out to go cycling and not to cycle to earn money but just to enjoy
myself and have self motivation to complete certain mileage or to reach a
destination at certain timing. This is considered as autotelic activity.
There are
different ways to explain leisure; there are 3 main ways that is covered in
today’s class.
Leisure as
Residual Time, which mean time that is left over after all our necessities of
life is being met. For example in term of going to for the run after work
(monetary issues settled), water and food provided before the run (necessity is
being covered).
Leisure as
activities… (this part I need more time to break down, for now I will skip;
time constrained)
Leisure as a
state of mind, refers to how the mind determines when we are engaged in certain
activities for example playing in a competitive game is more of monetary gains
then to relax and to have fun, doing of chores is not considered as leisure if
one’s obligated to do it. Therefore if like the video on the fish market,
everyone treats their workplace as a place of fun then highly it can be
considered as leisure.
Recreation
can be defined as participating in leisure activities that are meaningful and
enjoyable to the person volunteer. To be more clear recreation can be as simple
as collecting of stickers to hiking around the places.
Last but not
least about play. Play can be defined as activities in which individuals engage
freely and from which they derive personal satisfaction. Play is easier to be
understand when compared to the other two.
In term of
daily life, I would consider shopping with the family as part of leisure,
recreation and play. I am not too sure if my understanding of the topic is
correct. Do correct me if I am wrong as I am still trying my best to
understand.
Shopping
with my family is leisure as we often would be doing window shopping around the
shopping mall rather than be doing real shopping spree therefore I would say it
is leisure as it is done when the whole family is free and there is no purpose
in our shopping trip and that we can go for a meal or breaks anytime when we
feel tired. It can be consider as leisure as it is usually a residual time
where it is the left over of what our family have left so by doing window
shopping we can get together and enjoy each others’ accompaniment.
Shopping is
considered as recreation although I have mentioned that it is window shopping
but when I see that there is a particular stickers that I love to have, I will
buy and collect them. I did mentioned in class I am a soft toy lover, but I am
more crazy over stickers than to soft toys. Stickers are cheaper and easier to
be bought compared to soft toy. Okay side tracked abit, anyway since it is the
happen to buy, it is meaningful and enjoyable hobby for me therefore it is
consider as recreation.
I consider
shopping as a form of play too as my family when we do window shopping, we tend
to enter some clothes shop or shoe shops we will try the clothes or shoes out.
Since trying won’t cost us money it is to satisfy our personal feeling of how
certain shoes or clothes. That’s how I feel about play, cause quite a number of
time, our window shopping is more to try out clothes and match and mix like a
dressing up a Barbie doll.
That’s how I
see in term of daily life. I wondered if I have answered the RJ. Ha. Whoops, as
usual I don’t like to write proper essay when it is reflective journal cause I
feel reflective journal should be more interactive and to convey what I have
learnt for the day. Not sure if this way of writing is okay. I do understand my
performance is not up to standard. I will definitely improve. I was not
prepared for class. I promise you will see the different next week. See you! J
